In September 2014, the Umbrella Movement broke out in Hong Kong, with citizens protesting for universal suffrage in electing the Chief Executive. Protesters further occupied streets and squares, using umbrellas to block police pepper spray against riot control. The occupation lasted over two and a half months, involving around 1.2 million people, almost one-sixth of Hong Kong's population. However, their demands were all unsuccessful, ultimately being driven away by 7,000 police officers using batons, tear gas, and pepper spray. Over 400 people on both sides were injured, including 26 journalists. After Hong Kong returned its sovereignty to China, it remained the only city in the country where citizens could still protest. From European royal families to Japan's imperial family, none has been so arrogant towards their nationals as these British officials. In less than two decades after the handover of Hong Kong's sovereignty, Hong Kong’s Chief Executives have once again established a lofty and haughty stance. With a new master, it was impossible not to be arrogant.

Body armor resembling alien creatures, Hong Kong riot control officers adopted the tactics of ancient Roman legions, using shields, batons, gas masks, and tear gas. They sprayed pepper spray on faces, broke limbs with batons. On the opposite side from the riot control officers, students rushed towards the locations where tear gas canisters were smoking, pouring water bottles over them; partially cooled canisters might stop emitting smoke. Meanwhile, their companions jumped in to pick up the casings using trash tongs and put them into garbage bags.
The smoke from the tear gas stung eyes and made breathing difficult; this smoke could also cause burning sensations upon contact with skin.

Let's take a snapshot of ordinary life to experience Chinese society in this ordinary scenario. Old Li and his wife are both around fifty years old, operating a small restaurant at the entrance of their residential community. Every day, from 5 AM until 11 PM, they buy vegetables, prepare ingredients, wash, cook, serve meals, clear tables, wash dishes, and clean pots; this is what goes on in any typical restaurant. Water boiling, stir-frying, frying, steaming, baking— such continuous hard work year after year adds up to a surprising ordeal, but most small restaurants on the streets are like this. Rising at 5 AM to start working isn’t particularly early, and closing at 11 PM isn’t particularly late either. Considering human physical endurance, this kind of labor seems to wear down one’s body rapidly, so such restaurants are often family-run, where only family members can trust each other enough to manage it together. During the day when there are fewer customers, the old couple takes turns resting briefly. An electric scooter is parked outside the glass door, with a large box for buying and delivering vegetables attached to the back of the bike, and the bike always has an electrical plug in when parked at the entrance.
两人的生意不算差，收入其实比餐馆后面的小区里的很多人都不少， 但是除去每日的辛苦和为了吸引顾客需要付出的心力与笑脸， 他们头上有多少能管到他们的政府机构呢？ 首先是审批机构，工商许可、营业执照的申请和年审， 卫生许可、市容市貌管理、消防审查等等对老李来说都是官爷们。 然后是执法部门，安全环保、食卫检查， 这些是权力机构，随时都可以罚款或者责令停业整顿。 然后少不了的是收税和查税， 再有一些似乎不相关的官方机构比如文明城市建设、 节约粮食行动落实、发展教育甚至发展体育的都可能来餐馆， 他们当然不是来付钱吃饭的，他们是来推动自己的工作的， 但是对于老李来说就至少是一个也不敢得罪。 就是旁边小区里物业管理的保安， 如果来个凶吧吧的也可能白吃白拿， 这种情况做得久了就自然的见到了。 这还是个小保安，连保安队长都不是， 他们上面还有派出所片警和其实不算警察的街道辅警呢。 一个派出所所长也可能就是个科长，上面还有得爬呢。
Their business wasn't bad, and their income was actually not much less than that of many people in the community behind the restaurant. But when you subtract the daily toil and the effort needed to put on a smile for customers, how much does any government agency above them really care? Firstly, there are approval bodies such as industrial and commercial permits and business licenses. For Old Li, these are the officials themselves. Then come enforcement departments like safety and environmental protection inspections, food hygiene checks — these are power bodies that can fine or order a shutdown at any moment. Next is taxation and tax audits. Some seemingly unrelated official bodies might also show up, such as those involved in promoting civilized city construction, implementing campaigns to save food, developing education, or even promoting sports. These could all visit the restaurant. Of course, they aren't there to pay for meals; their goal is to push their own agendas. But for Old Li, it's better not to offend any of them. Even a security guard from the community management of the adjacent neighborhood might come and demand free meals if he looks intimidating enough. After all these years, seeing such things has become commonplace. This isn't even a high-ranking security officer; the ones above him are station police officers and street auxiliary police who aren't exactly real policemen either. A station chief could be just another section-level cadre, with more to climb up through the ranks.
这些层层盘剥和欺压也不说自己就是层层渔网一样的东西， 他们还常常推行亲民服务呢， 不管怎么样微笑上门总比明火执仗好， 逢年过节来收个红包总比捏着拳头来收保护费好。
These layers of exploitation and oppression do not even call themselves what they are—layers of fishing nets. They often push for people-friendly services too, After all, a smile at the door is better than an open display of power, Sending red envelopes during festivals is better than collecting protection fees with clenched fists.

而那些360度管得着老李的小店的都是什么样的人呢？ 在盛世里让人被紧紧的束缚着不敢听不吱声只能赔着笑脸俯首求食的人们， 他们在体制里也都是最底层的小虾米。 在过去几年地方经济是政府业务中很重要的， 但是现在会有很多政治性的任务比如安全、环保和政治学习， 这些都可以变为领导考查业绩做人事调整的借口。 一旦有人事变动，小虾米们就全部置身局中了。 工作表现可能会被灵活评价， 维护好背景关系才有更硬的支撑， 最直接有效的是送钱，但是如何才能送到合适的价格？ 而且从体制来说，反腐部门才是更强的权力组织， 送钱绝对是高技术高风险， 在准确的时间用正确的方法送到合适的人手里， 不然就几乎是去送头了。
What kind of people are those who can 360-degree manage Old Li's small store? In prosperity, the people who are tightly restrained and dare not speak up or make a sound, forced to smile and beg for food, are also the lowest-level shrimp in the system. In the past few years, local economies were an important part of government business, but now there will be many politically-oriented tasks such as safety, environmental protection, and political study, which can serve as excuses for leaders to examine performance and make personnel adjustments. As soon as there is a personnel change, these shrimps will all find themselves in the middle of it. Work performance might be flexibly evaluated, maintaining good background connections would provide stronger support, the most direct and effective way is to send money, but how can one determine the right price? Moreover, from the perspective of the system, anti-corruption departments are stronger power organizations, sending money is absolutely high-tech and high-risk. It must be delivered at the right time and in the correct manner to the right person, otherwise it would almost be a suicide mission.

Now in peace times, in this layered society, Uncle Li's small restaurant is not at the very bottom. Up and down, layer upon layer are all filled with various schemes. A person who doesn't harm others will be harmed by someone else. This includes Uncle Li and his wife. When they cook, they use premium cooking oil delivered door-to-door for promotion. These large buckets of cooking oil cost half the price but are enriched with strong flavors. Of course, they know these oils are harmful to health, but using such self-damaging ingredients sometimes still results in losses even after their hard work.

Those shrimp within the system keep at least one layer away from Old Li, each with their own struggles. Some might say that even in the system, one can coast without striving for advancement and still survive, but such a situation either involves a great deal of luck or being strategically placed within a beneficial network; otherwise, it's like saying you can remain pure water in a sewage pond. Those who make such claims are either ignorant or shameless, and even if they truly believe so, it is a form of ordinary evil. This evil is akin to the ignorance of civil servants during the Nazi concentration camps— the most despicable type of murderer is one who doesn't realize they have committed murder.
In this society, humans are like fresh fish awaiting slaughter on a fishmonger's stall, where the fishmongers show no concern for the life of the fish. The processes of gutting, scaling, and weighing are done without emotion.
When an individual becomes that fish, that is their hell. When everyone turns into either a fish or a fishmonger, that is China. Similarly, when Nietzsche went mad while holding onto a horse, all his philosophical theories became meaningless; the fate of humanity in an authoritarian regime is like that horse— Old Li and the gentlemen he looks up to, as well as the fish on the stall, are all one and the same.

Hierarchical and complex bureaucratic organizations apply the same principle: the law of power. This sole principle allows people to fall into corruption through various schemes, reflecting human nature in all its complexity, and educational institutions are no exception. There is nothing exceptional within this pyramid structure; education, healthcare, social security... any industry or institution that claims to serve the people operates similarly. For instance, education generally has positive significance, but in an illiterate society, it can be a degrading and ceaseless tool for destroying individuals. In terms of social sciences, corruption is obviously due to political reasons, and many might believe that scientific and technological education should maintain a significant distance from politics or traditional culture. However, there are no exceptions. The root issue lies in the authoritarian system eliminating people's ability to falsify information. Students learn the ability to memorize answers, gaining compliance and submissiveness, which even becomes their new instinct. Science requires rigorous logic to face facts, but such logical space does not exist within this pyramid structure. Engineering, physical science, and mathematics students also lose the opportunity to realize that education will make them slaves of the masses. When academic institutions become appendages of power, teachers and scholars in all disciplines inevitably become crawling insects obeying power. For example, during the steel production campaign, no scholar could explain the correct method for smelting steel; when the per-acre yield reached ten thousand bushels, no scholar could point out that these figures were fabricated. If engineering or physical science students or scholars still believe they can remain independent and focus on research, this laughable and widespread illusion is akin to believing one can breathe in a vacuum.

Russia boasts the largest landmass on Earth, the Russian military has not only demonstrated its conventional combat capabilities but also inherited the world's largest nuclear arsenal. However, Russia's economy now relies heavily on energy exports to support over 140 million people. Its GDP is gradually being surpassed by South Korea, both countries hovering around a GDP of approximately $1.5 trillion. South Korea has a population of more than 50 million, about one-third that of Russia, and in the past 30 years since before the disintegration of the Soviet Union to the present day, two billion people from these two nations means at least two billion stories have unfolded during periods when their GDP curves were drawing closer. The collapse of the Soviet Union was a thunderous wake-up call for China, still causing trepidation among its rulers. The historical ties between China (and Russia) may be one of the most influential external forces shaping 1.4 billion people in China over nearly a century.
