Yin was the later capital of the Shang Dynasty, and Yin Xu is the remains of Yin. Oracle bones were discovered at the end of the Qing Dynasty. About three or four decades later, during the Republic of China period, the Academia Sinica began archaeological excavations at Yin Xu in 1928 (the 17th year of the Republic of China). At that time, Fu Ssu-nien was the acting director of the History and Philology Department of the Academia Sinica. He dispatched Dong Zuobin to conduct on-site investigations in Anyang. After the first excavation, Dong Zuobin wrote "Report on the Test Excavation at Xiaotun, Anyang in October of the 17th Year of the Republic of China". Before the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japan during the Republic of China period, there were fifteen excavations conducted, digging up the lifeblood of Han culture multiple times. After 1949, excavations continued to be organized by the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Over a hundred thousand inscribed oracle bones have been unearthed, with more than five thousand individual characters already identified. This is one of the origins of Chinese characters.

安阳西北 洹水两岸，以小屯村为中心， 周边约36平方公里的商代晚期都城遗址中， 有上千座人祭坑， 几乎每座房屋遗址下都有 人殉、人牲的 骸骨。 而从 已有的甲骨文字中 统计，合计共献祭13052人， 其中过半人牲 被称为 羌。

In the northwest of Anyang, along the banks of Hongshui River, centered around Xiaotun Village, in the approximately 36 square kilometers of the late Shang dynasty capital site surrounding it, there are over a thousand human sacrifice pits. Almost every house site has skeletal remains of humans used as sacrifices or living offerings. And from the counted甲骨文字 (oracle bone inscriptions), a total of 13,052 people were sacrificed in rituals, with more than half of the living offerings called 羌 (Qiang).

One can argue that the Shang Dynasty had its own era and characteristics, but this culture is similar to cannibalism. No Aztec blood sacrifice pyramids were found in Yinxu, but there was a similar ritualized blood sacrifice behavior. Even in their blood sacrifices, the Shang people fell short of the more advanced indigenous peoples, who built stone pyramids, climbed high up and performed rituals under the sun. The CCP still practices eugenics today.

In mammals, cannibalism is relatively rare. Some people believe that the individuals sacrificed in Shang Dynasty human sacrifices were slaughtered for offerings to ancestors and other deities, thus no eating of human flesh occurred, which would not count as a cannibalistic practice. Furthermore, it was thought that cannibalism could transmit viruses, which would then spread epidemics, so this served as evidence that the Shang people did not engage in cannibalism. These whitewashing arguments do not hold up. Firstly, cannibalism does not necessarily lead to virus transmission, especially when cooked and eaten, which significantly reduces the risk of viral and bacterial infection. The means of infection from cannibalism involves contact and consumption of brain tissue. The Shang Dynasty already had bronze vessels, with cooking conditions far superior to those found in other cannibalistic tribes discovered elsewhere in the world. Multiple excavated bronze vessels have been found containing cooked human skulls. Conversely, today's Communist Party of China does not conduct brain transplants.

In oracle bones, "甲" refers to turtle plastrons, usually not the shells on the back but the underside. Because the underside is easier to engrave and produces cracks when burned, Shang shamans or witches predicted fortune from these cracks.
