I'll explain `aider/models.py` —
it's the **model configuration and management** module for aider.

## Overview

`models.py` handles everything related to LLM models:
loading settings, validating environment variables,
managing model metadata, and sending completion requests.

## Key Components

### 1. **ModelSettings dataclass**
Defines all configurable properties for a model:
- `name` — model identifier (e.g., `"gpt-4o"`, `"claude-sonnet-4-6"`)
- `edit_format` — how the model outputs code edits (`"diff"`, `"whole"`, `"udiff"`, etc.)
- `weak_model_name` — fallback model for cheaper operations (commit messages, etc.)
- `use_repo_map` — whether to include codebase map in context
- `use_temperature` — temperature setting (bool or float)
- `streaming` — whether to stream responses
- `reasoning_tag` — tag to strip reasoning content (e.g., `"think"` for DeepSeek R1)
- `extra_params` — additional parameters passed to litellm
- `accepts_settings` — list of supported settings (e.g., `"thinking_tokens"`, `"reasoning_effort"`)

### 2. **Model class** (inherits ModelSettings)
The main class that represents a configured model:

**Initialization:**
- Resolves model aliases (e.g., `"sonnet"` → `"claude-sonnet-4-6"`)
- Loads model info from litellm's database or local cache
- Validates environment variables (API keys)
- Configures model-specific settings via `configure_model_settings()`

**configure_model_settings():**
- First checks for exact match in `MODEL_SETTINGS` (loaded from `model-settings.yml`)
- If no exact match, applies generic rules based on model name patterns:
  - `o3-mini` → `edit_format="diff"`, `use_temperature=False`
  - `deepseek` + `r1` → `reasoning_tag="think"`, `use_temperature=False`
  - `claude-3.5-sonnet` → `edit_format="diff"`, `examples_as_sys_msg=True`
  - etc.
- Applies user-defined overrides from `aider/extra_params` settings

**Model info management:**
- `ModelInfoManager` class caches model metadata (context window size, costs) from litellm's JSON database
- Falls back to scraping OpenRouter pages for OpenRouter models
- Supports local model definitions via `register_litellm_models()`

### 3. **Model aliases**
Maps short names to full model identifiers:
```python
MODEL_ALIASES = {
    "sonnet": "claude-sonnet-4-6",
    "haiku": "claude-haiku-4-5",
    "opus": "claude-opus-4-7",
    "4o": "gpt-4o",
    "deepseek": "deepseek/deepseek-chat",
    "r1": "deepseek/deepseek-reasoner",
    "flash": "gemini/gemini-flash-latest",
    # ... more
}
```

### 4. **Environment validation**
- `validate_environment()` checks for required API keys
- `fast_validate_environment()` provides a quick check for common models without importing litellm
- Handles special cases like AWS Bedrock (checks for `AWS_PROFILE`), GitHub Copilot tokens

### 5. **Token counting**
- `token_count()` uses litellm's token counter for messages
- `token_count_for_image()` calculates image token costs (GPT-4V style)
- `parse_token_value()` converts human-readable token values (`"8k"`, `"10.5M"`) to integers

### 6. **Thinking tokens & reasoning effort**
- `set_thinking_tokens()` configures extended thinking for Claude models
- `set_reasoning_effort()` configures reasoning effort for OpenAI models
- Handles both standard API format and OpenRouter's format

### 7. **Sending completions**
- `send_completion()` sends requests via litellm with proper configuration
- Handles GitHub Copilot token authentication
- `simple_send_with_retries()` provides retry logic for transient errors

### 8. **Model registration**
- `register_models()` loads user-defined model settings from YAML files
- `register_litellm_models()` loads custom model definitions from JSON5 files
- These are merged into `MODEL_SETTINGS` and `model_info_manager.local_model_metadata`

### 9. **Fuzzy matching**
- `fuzzy_match_models()` finds models by partial name matching
- Used for error messages when a model name is mistyped
- `print_matching_models()` displays matches to the user

## How it all fits together

1. User specifies a model (e.g., `--model sonnet`)
2. `Model.__init__()` resolves alias, loads settings, validates environment
3. `configure_model_settings()` applies appropriate defaults
4. When sending a request, `send_completion()` configures litellm with all parameters
5. Token counting and context window management ensure the request fits within limits

This module is the **central configuration hub** for all LLM interactions in aider.
